Dreaming of riding through forest trails, frozen lakes (always with caution), or groomed tracks, often in areas you would not explore on skis or snowshoes? Fatbiking offers a different way to experience winter and keep your snow adventures going. Curious to give it a try? Here are a few tips and five great places to help you tame the beast.

How to dress for fatbiking?

The layering system is the key to staying comfortable. As with cross-country skiing or four-season cycling, it allows you to manage your body temperature based on effort and weather conditions. Avoid long coats that can restrict movement, as well as overly loose pants that may catch on the chain.

From head to toe, choose the right accessories. Wearing a helmet and goggles is strongly recommended. If you already own a ski helmet and goggles, they will work perfectly. Gear up with one of our multifunction bamboo neckwarmers, perfect for maintaining a comfortable body temperature while riding. On colder days, you can also slip on an overhood over your helmet. These two NOPé-designed head and neck accessories will help you extend your adventures on snowy trails. Choose insulated gloves or mittens that retain heat, along with insulated, waterproof boots that work well with the pedals. There are also handlebar-mounted pogies and shoe covers designed to block cold wind.

Practical tips to get started

Fatbiking is not only fun, it is also an excellent full-body workout. It strongly stimulates the cardiovascular system while engaging the muscles of the legs, core, and overall stability. Here are a few tips before you get in the saddle.

Explore the sensations.

With its oversized tires, a fatbike offers traction and stability, but it is wise to start with a few rides on flat terrain before heading into the trails.

Start gradually.

Choose shorter outings and slowly increase the duration of your effort.

Maintain a stable position.

Adopt a fairly upright and relaxed posture. Avoid sudden movements that could cause you to skid.

Anticipate in turns.

Look far ahead, choose your line early, and keep your speed moderate. Stay on groomed trails, firmer snow, or existing tracks.
