In our "Libre comme" series, we hit the roads, lakes, rivers, and trails of Quebec to uncover all their secrets, well-dressed and well-accompanied.
Valérie has always had the spirit of an explorer, but it’s in the Eastern Townships that she truly found her paradise. After swapping city life for wide-open spaces, she grew closer to nature and now lives in perfect harmony with the mountains that fascinate her (she even works in the area!). For Valérie, adventures no longer require long trips, but instead, they transform into magical moments woven into her daily life.
“For the past few years, I’ve been living just steps away from the mountain. It’s literally in my backyard — a little dream come true!” she says enthusiastically. And this dream is something Valérie lives fully, whether it’s a trail run, an early morning ascent to watch the sunrise, or a late-afternoon hike, when the autumn colours set the hills ablaze.
One of her favourite hikes? The Giroux East slope of Mont-Orford. “It’s a short hike, but it gives access to stunning viewpoints,” she explains. On her way up, Valérie often heads to the rocky cliff, a spot well-loved by locals, where you can admire the mountain in different lights, depending on the season and time of day.
“On autumn evenings, you see the mountain darken under an orange sunset that eventually hides behind it. Never the same, always magnificent!” With Lake Memphrémagog stretching below, offering ever-changing reflections on the horizon, Valérie feels lucky to experience these moments daily. “I often invite friends or family when they visit, and no one remains indifferent to this view. Add a little aperitif, and you’ve got a guaranteed hit!” she adds, staying true to her cheerful nature and love for simple pleasures. We couldn’t agree more!
