Libre comme Alexine; a little nature adventure in Charlevoix.
Born and raised in Charlevoix, Alexine left her hometown for nearly a decade before returning in 2021. This homecoming was driven by a deep desire to rediscover the wonders of her "playground" in Charlevoix. It led her to explore landscapes where the river meets the mountains, where rocks, moss, water bodies, and seaweed create a captivating natural tableau. Passionate about those small moments in nature she captures so well, Alexine invites us on a weekend adventure to L’Isle-aux-Coudres.
Setting off to L’Isle-aux-Coudres
The adventure begins early on a Saturday morning with a mandatory ferry ride from the Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive dock. A long line hints at the island's popularity this weekend. During the 15-20 minute crossing, Alexine gazes at the river, and childhood memories resurface.
"This boat brings back so many memories. We often came to L’Isle-aux-Coudres with my parents, and the boat ride was always thrilling. My brother and I knew we were in for a good time. The island offers a great variety of tales and legends loved by children. I particularly remember the weeping rock and the crooked house! I'd say the excitement is just as strong today. I know I will see beautiful landscapes and meet the kind and warm islanders."
Setting up at camping Leclerc
Upon arrival, let’s head to Leclerc Campground to set up the tent. The sites near the river offer a breathtaking view of the other shore, the Bas-St-Laurent. The panorama is stunning, a perfect preview of the adventure ahead! After setting up her tent, Alexine walks to the end of chemin de l’Islet to watch the sunset. At low tide, it's easy to walk on the rocks and take in the natural spectacle. The vibrant colours of the sunset behind the Massif mountains offer one of Charlevoix's most beeeautiful sunsets.
An energizing morning
The next morning, it's time to start the day with a little bite at La Fabrique de l’Isle. This charming spot, run by a warm team of women, offers a delightful selection of drinks and snacks. For our adventurer, it's a black coffee and a classic ham and cheese sandwich before setting off on a 21 km bike ride along the coast!
Biking and treats
During the bike ride, a stop at dépanneur Chez Paul is a must for a sweet treat: cream sugar buns that give the energy boost needed for the day ahead. This sweet delight has been a classic since her childhood, and she takes the opportunity to bring some back for her father!
Local encounters and discoveries
After the ride, it's off to Pedneault Orchard to greet friends. This family business, "producers of happiness since 1918," boasts over 6000 apple trees of 35 varieties and 3000 fruit trees (pears, plums, cherries, serviceberries…). It's another great chance to gather more memories to take home. A bit further at Charlotte Atelier boutique, Alexine discovers hand-made catalognes and wool blankets, treasures of local craftsmanship!
